Design Pulse

How Google, Apple, design studios and design-led product companies actually build their sites, measured from the rendered page every week.

What stands out

The biggest gaps between the camps this week, written from the numbers below.

Buck the trend

What most of the measured sites do, and the sites already doing the opposite. Knowing the median is how you choose to break it.

Trait by trait

Each value is the typical site in that camp: the median for sizes, the share of sites or elements for everything else. The camp that leads each trait is marked in color.

The type they set

The families carrying the most text on each camp’s sites, by number of sites.

Over time

Every Monday adds a point, so these lines show which way each camp is moving.

How it’s measured

A real browser
Each site loads in Chromium at 1440 by 900, scrolls to wake lazy content, and returns to the top. Cookie banners and chat bubbles are hidden, never clicked.
Boxes and buttons
A box is any element with its own fill, a border on three or more sides, or a shadow. Buttons are buttons and link-buttons under 420 pixels wide.
The first screen
Whitespace, ground, image coverage and color come from the rendered first screen, analysed in memory. No screenshots are kept.
Type contrast
The largest text near the top divided by the most common body size. A 6 means the headline is six times the body text.
The camps
Eight Google sites, eight Apple sites, 24 studios and foundries, and ten design-led product companies. The list is editable and lives in the KIT repo.
What it can’t see
Home pages only, at desktop size. A site can change its look any week, and one redesign moves its camp’s median.
