Art

What the studios and type foundries are putting on screen right now: motion, imagery, texture and type used as image. With glimpses of what Google, Apple and the product companies are doing.

Measured, not guessed. Pulse opens each home page in a real browser every Monday and records how it uses imagery. Pixels are read to tell colour from black-and-white; no screenshots are kept.

On screen now

Ranked by how many studio and foundry sites use each move. The bars show every camp, so you can see what’s studio-only and what has gone mainstream.

    What fills the first screen

The largest thing in the first 900 pixels of each home page, camp by camp.

    Three moves to borrow

The studio signals furthest ahead of everyone else this week. Use one, not all three.

    Glimpses

Every studio and foundry, then a few from each of the other camps. Colour strips are the actual screen colours by area. Select a move to see who’s using it, then visit the site.

    How it’s measured

    The sites
The same home pages Design Pulse measures, with the designers camp split into studios and type foundries.
    First screen
The largest video, WebGL canvas, photo or illustration covering at least 18% of the 1440 × 900 view. If nothing that large appears, type carries the screen.
    Black-and-white
On-screen image areas are read in memory; an image with average saturation under 8% counts as black-and-white. Half the image area or more marks the site.
    Limits
One page per site, one moment in time. Cookie banners are hidden, never clicked. Sites that block automated browsers drop out for the week.
